New TV need avice on surround sound.
Hi not sure where this should go, so moderators please move if need be into the right category.
I bought a new 37 inch lcd tv, and I want to get a surround system, entertainment center going.
I am a little confused about the vast number of surround sound systems.
I currently use a HDMI connection with an up convert 1080p dvdplayer.
I am looking for a good entry level surround system.
Or
I can build or use an old pc with a DVI to HDMI connector and use my computers sound system.
Which would be better, and give me a better experience.
Thanks in advance.

Surround sound is strictly audio.
First decide if you want to go with 7.1 or 5.1 sound.
You'll need a good amplifier or a receiver/amplifier. The latter are more affordable and available. Figure about $400 for a decent entry level receiver.
Speakers and their positioning relative to the seating is critical.
Even entry level, mediocre speakers can be quite expensive. Figure at least $200 each or about $1,200 minimum.
For 5.1 you'll need a left and right front pair, a center, a left and right rear pair and a sub woofer.
For 7.1 add a left and right side pair.
That said there are many pre-configured low end home theater sound systems for a few hundred dollars. IIRC Bose makes an entry level Acoustimass system for about $700.
There is a lot of junk on the market. Buy only highly rated equipment for your price range. Buy substance, not style.
Visit an audio retailer in your area to get some background and advice on the direction you should go for your specific needs.
They have sound rooms where you can compare the sounds from various speaker/receiver configurations.
Whatever you do, just suck up information and do not buy anything on your first visit.
